How to get into Dartford Grammar School

Dartford Grammar School is a selective secondary school in Kent. To get into Dartford Grammar School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into Dartford Grammar School with all the important information you need to know.

Admission Requirements

Children born between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2026 (see key dates). The school admits 180 boys into Year 7 each September (see key dates). [1]

Families must register their sons for the Kent 11+ Test during the summer of Year 5 (see key dates). Boys who achieve a grammar school assessment become eligible for admission (see key dates). [1]

Boys require a total score of 332 or higher and no single score lower than 107 to qualify for grammar school assessment (see key dates). Children receive three standardised scores for English, maths and reasoning, plus one total aggregate score (see key dates).

Application Process

Families register for the Kent 11+ Test through Kent County Council between Monday 2nd June 2025 and Tuesday 1st July 2025 (see key dates). Registration happens during the summer of Year 5 for September 2026 entry (see key dates). [1]

Children take the examination in September 2025 and receive results by Thursday 16th October 2025 (see key dates). Families then submit their Secondary Common Application Form by Friday 31st October 2025 through their local authority website (see key dates).

Boys meeting Pupil Premium criteria must complete a Supplementary Information Form for 2025 admissions (see key dates). For specific queries, contact the admissions team at the school information section. [1]

Zone A Priority Area

The school prioritises half of its Year 7 places for children living in Zone A (see key dates). This means 90 places are allocated to Zone A applicants and 90 places to all other applicants (see key dates).

Zone A covers the Dartford Electoral Wards including Brent, Bean and Darenth, Castle, Greenhithe, Heath, Joyce Green, Joydens Wood, Littlebrook, Longfield, New Barn & Southfleet, Newtown, Princes, Stone, Sutton-at-Hone and Hawley, Swanscombe, Town, West Hill, and Wilmington (see key dates).

When the school receives more than 180 qualified applicants, oversubscription criteria apply with priority given to children who are or were in Local Authority care, followed by boys with Pupil Premium eligibility (see key dates).

Preparation Guidance

The Kent 11+ Test consists of two multiple-choice papers supplied by GL Assessment (see key dates). The first paper lasts one hour and assesses English and maths, with each section containing a 5-minute practice exercise followed by a 25-minute test (see key dates).

The second paper lasts one hour and tests verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning (see key dates). These reasoning subjects are not taught in schools, so children may be unfamiliar with these question styles (see key dates).

Educational psychologists recommend daily learning sessions of 20-30 minutes for children aged 10-11 years (see key dates). The most effective preparation happens in short, consistent bursts to reinforce core skills without losing focus (see key dates). For free preparation resources, visit practice papers section and for tutoring support, see tutor recommendations.

Practical Advice

The exam tests identify children in the top 25% of the ability range (see key dates). Many children will find the test challenging as grammar schools provide for this high-achieving cohort (see key dates).

Achieving the Kent 11+ Test pass mark does not guarantee admission to Dartford Grammar School (see key dates). The school is highly competitive with recent data showing approximately 1,293 applications for 180 places in 2023 (see key dates).

Families should research backup school options in Kent and consider other grammar schools in the area. If unsuccessful, families have the right to appeal the decision to an Independent Appeal Panel (see key dates). For specific admission queries and contact details, visit the school information section.

The school encourages prospective families to attend Open Evening, typically held in June, where staff provide guided tours and the Head delivers presentations (see key dates). [1]

Kent 11+ Test Information

In order to get into Dartford Grammar School, children need to pass the Kent 11+ Test. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Kent 11+ Test Subjects & Structure

The Kent 11+ Test requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning

The entrance examination for Dartford Grammar School, known as the Kent Test, is a challenging assessment designed to evaluate the academic potential of prospective students. The test comprises two multiple-choice papers, each lasting one hour, which are provided by GL Assessment.

The first paper focuses on English and maths, with questions based on the Key Stage 2 national curriculum. This section assesses the candidate's proficiency in literacy and numeracy skills, which are essential for success in secondary education.

The second paper concentrates on verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and spatial reasoning. These subjects are not typically taught in primary schools, so candidates may be less familiar with these types of questions. This section of the test aims to evaluate the student's ability to think logically, recognize patterns, and manipulate shapes and figures mentally. Success in this part of the assessment demonstrates a child's aptitude for learning and problem-solving, which are crucial skills for thriving in a grammar school environment.

Other Schools using Kent 11+ Test

As well as Dartford Grammar School, several other schools also use Kent 11+ Test. These are:

Kent 11+ Test Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Dartford Grammar School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Kent 11+ Test Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Kent 11+ Test changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Dartford Grammar School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
