How to get into Kendrick School

Kendrick School is a selective secondary school in Berkshire. To get into Kendrick School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into Kendrick School with all the important information you need to know.

Admission Requirements

Kendrick School is a high-achieving selective school for girls aged 11 to 18 located in Reading, Berkshire. Children born between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2026 (see key dates).

The school offers 128 places annually [1]. The school operates a strict catchment area system with Priority Area 1 and Priority Area 2.

Priority Area 1 includes postcodes RG1, RG2 0, RG2 6, RG2 7, RG2 8, RG30 1, RG30 2, RG30 3, RG30 4, RG30 6, RG31 4, RG31 5, RG31 6, RG31 7, RG4 5, RG4 6, RG4 7, RG4 8, RG5 3, RG6 1, RG6 5, RG6 6, RG6 7. Priority Area 2 includes RG2 9, RG4 9, RG5 4, RG6 3, RG6 4, RG7, RG8, RG9, RG10, RG12, RG27 0, RG40, RG41, RG42, RG45, GU17 0, GU46, GU47, SL6 3, SL6 4, SL6 5, SL6 6.

Children must be living permanently at an address within the designated area on 31st August 2025 and still living there when they start school in September 2026 to be considered. The school strongly advises parents who live outside of their designated area NOT to register their child to sit their test.

Application Process

Families must complete two separate applications. First, they need to register their child for the Kendrick School Admission Test by completing the online registration form on the school website. The purpose of registration is for children to take the entrance test, not apply for a place at Kendrick School.

Online registration for the 2025 exam opens on Thursday 1st May on the website of Kendrick School and closes at midnight on Tuesday 1st July 2025 (see key dates). Applicants will be sent the test day arrangements and session time by email no later than Friday 18th July 2025 (see key dates).

Families must then name the school as one of their preferred schools on the secondary school Common Application Form. This will be available on their home council website from early September and must be submitted by 31st October 2025 (see key dates). If families live outside Reading, they must apply through their own Local Authority - even if their child currently attends a Reading primary school.

In whichever year families are applying, they can name up to 6 schools on their CAF. For more specific contact information, families should refer to the school information section.

Examination Information

The exam will take place on Friday 19th September 2025 (see key dates) and families will receive their child's results in mid-October. The provider for the Kendrick School 11+ exam changed in September 2023 from CEM to GL Assessment.

The 11 plus exam for entry to Kendrick School consists of two one-hour papers with a short break between them. All the questions are multiple-choice and cover four subjects: English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. There is no creative writing element to the admission tests.

Children's answers will be totalled together and converted into a standardised age score which takes into account their age in years and months at the time of taking the test to ensure that younger children aren't disadvantaged. All children's standardised age scores are then put into a rank order, from highest to lowest, and Kendrick School allocates places based on this list.

Oversubscription Criteria

The school makes offers from the list following this priority order, where each category is ranked by score. Children who live within Priority Area 1 or 2 and receive either the pupil premium or service premium receive priority.

Offers are then made to children who live within Priority Area 1 or 2, until 96 places have been filled. After this, 32 places are offered in this order until all places have been offered. The final category includes students whose home address is not in the designated area of the school.

Passing the 11 plus doesn't guarantee that children will be allocated a place at their preferred school, as many grammar schools are often oversubscribed with qualified children. It is extremely challenging to secure entry to Kendrick School, with over 8 girls applying for every place.

Preparation Guidance

It's important to build a good knowledge base before the 11 plus using a 'little and often' approach when learning is key - brains encode new information more effectively when dealing with smaller 'chunks' of information. For children aged 10-11, child psychologists recommend regular study sessions of 20-30 minutes.

In Year 6, most children can only maintain their concentration for half an hour at a time, so families should approach 11+ revision sessions realistically and split study sessions into short, manageable blocks. The Kendrick School entrance exams place a large emphasis on reasoning.

The most useful way to prepare for Kendrick School's 11+ entrance exam is to use practice tests to familiarise children with the exam content and format, which can help children to build their confidence and improve their performance in the exam. For free preparation resources, families can visit our practice papers section.

If children encounter problems with time management, families should introduce practice exam papers into their study routine. For professional tutoring guidance, families can explore our tutoring recommendations.

Practical Advice

On exam day, candidates are expected to bring the equipment they would normally need for examinations: pen, pencil, ruler, eraser, mathematical equipment such as calculator, protractor and a compass. No phones or watches are allowed.

If Kendrick School is a child's first choice, they might feel undue pressure to perform well in the 11+ exam, however by learning how to study for the 11 Plus exam, children should be able to approach the exam with confidence. Families should maintain realistic expectations and ensure their child gets adequate rest before the exam.

There is no longer a score sharing agreement in place with Slough and therefore, if children are applying for both Kendrick and Slough, they will need to sit both the Kendrick and Slough Consortium exams. Families should consider alternative grammar schools in Berkshire as backup options.

For specific admissions queries or contact information, families should refer to the school information section. For more information, families can email admissions@kendrick.reading.sch.uk [1].

Kendrick School 11+ Information

In order to get into Kendrick School, children need to pass the Kendrick School 11+. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Kendrick School 11+ Subjects & Structure

The Kendrick School 11+ requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-verbal Reasoning

The 11 plus exam for Kendrick School, provided by GL Assessment, is a rigorous assessment designed to evaluate the academic abilities of children seeking admission. The exam comprises two one-hour papers, with a brief intermission between them. All questions are presented in a multiple-choice format, covering four key subjects: English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-verbal Reasoning.

The English section assesses the child's grasp of the subject matter taught up to the beginning of Year 6, including reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Similarly, the Maths section evaluates the child's understanding of the national curriculum content up to the start of Year 6, covering aspects of number, measurement, geometry, and statistics. Children may encounter unfamiliar problem-solving scenarios that require them to apply their mathematical skills.

Verbal Reasoning involves problem-solving using written information, such as letters, symbols, numbers, and words. This section examines word production, usage, and the relationships between them, as well as the ability to solve sequences using written information. Non-verbal Reasoning, on the other hand, focuses on problem-solving using abstract information, such as shapes and diagrams. Children must identify common features and relationships between shapes and sequences of shapes. Some questions may involve codes, requiring the matching of shape features with letters.

Kendrick School 11+ Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Kendrick School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Kendrick School 11+ Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Kendrick School 11+ changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Kendrick School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
