How to get into King Edward VI Grammar School
King Edward VI Grammar School is a selective secondary school in Lincolnshire. To get into King Edward VI Grammar School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into King Edward VI Grammar School with all the important information you need to know.
Admission Requirements
Children born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2026 (see key dates). Children must pass the 11-plus examination to attend the school [1].
King Edward VI Grammar School welcomes applications from children living in the local community of Louth and its surrounding villages, from Market Rasen, and North East Lincolnshire. The catchment area is the school's free bus travel zone, determined by Lincolnshire County Council. This covers the area of Wolds, East of Louth and North to Holton le Clay.
Applicants must meet the required standard in the admissions exam to be allocated a place. The exam aims to identify the top 25% of children (based on ability) living in the area. Students should achieve a standardised score of 220 in both Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning papers in order to be considered for a place.
- Looked after or previously looked after children receive priority
- Siblings of children who will still be attending King Edward VI when the child is due to start
- Twins who have both passed the test for the same year of entry
- Eligible children in year 6 who live within the traditional catchment area or are attending one of the named primary schools
- If any criteria have too many applicants then the tie-break will be by straight line distance from home to school
Application Process
Registration for the 2025 exam opens on Friday 10th January 2025 and closes on Monday 31st March 2025 (see key dates). Families can register their child for the test via the website of any of the participating schools.
To register, families must download and complete a registration form from the school's website in the first instance. Parents living in Lincolnshire should also complete a Common Application Form (CAF) directly via the LA website. Failure to do so will mean children will not be considered for a grammar school place in Lincolnshire.
The application form must be submitted to the home local council by 31st October 2025 (see key dates). Test results will be sent to families by mid-October 2025, informing them if their child has met the qualifying standard to be eligible for a place.
- Register for the test via any participating school's website
- Download and complete the registration form from the school's website
- Complete the Common Application Form (CAF) via the Local Authority website
- Use test results to decide which schools to name on the secondary school common application form
- School allocations are announced in March 2026 on National Offers Day
- For specific contact information, see the school information section
Exam Information
King Edward VI Grammar School uses the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools 11 plus. There are 15 grammar schools in the Consortium and they share the same entrance test. This means children will only need to take the test once, even if applying to more than one school in the Consortium.
The 11 plus exam is taken over two dates. The first paper will take place on Saturday 13th September and the second paper will take place a week later on Saturday 20th September (see key dates). The test consists of two multiple-choice papers that test children's Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning skills. The Non-Verbal Reasoning test also assesses Spatial Reasoning.
Verbal reasoning: this paper consists of 80 questions split across 15 sections. The paper has a time limit of 50 minutes. Non-verbal and spatial reasoning: this paper consists of 70 questions split across 5 sections. Each section is timed individually by the invigilator.
- All questions in the Lincolnshire 11+ are multiple-choice
- Grammar schools in Lincolnshire use GL Assessment as their exam provider
- The exam uses an age-standardised score to ensure all applicants are fairly assessed
- Passing the test does not guarantee a place offer - it simply means children have surpassed the required threshold
Preparation Guidance
Pupils who are able to score 80%+ consistently in practice tests should be on track to pass the 11 Plus. This has historically been a fairly strong indicator that children should do well in the Lincolnshire 11+ exam.
Families should begin preparation well in advance using a little and often approach. The school considers that the two familiarisation tests they provide are sufficient preparation for the tests. However, familiarisation papers are available to purchase from various outlets or free to download from the GL Assessment website.
For comprehensive preparation resources, families can access practice 11-plus papers specifically designed for the Lincolnshire 11+ format. Additional tutoring support can be found through our 11-plus tutor recommendations.
- Start preparation at least 12 months before the exam date
- Complete the school's familiarisation tests as a starting point
- Practice with GL Assessment format papers specifically
- Focus on both verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning skills
- Use timed practice to build exam confidence
- Consider accessing free preparation resources from GL Assessment website
- Contact the school directly for detailed preparation guidance
Practical Advice
Families will receive their child's results on Friday 10th October 2025 (see key dates). In March 2026, families will find out which school their child has been allocated a place at. They will be allocated a place at their highest-preferred school for which they meet the entry criteria and which has places available. If no places are available at preferred schools, they will be offered a place at another school in their area.
On exam day, children should arrive well-rested and prepared. Practice tests in the GL Assessment format used by Lincolnshire Grammar Schools will prove very useful for children preparing for the Lincolnshire 11+ exam. Families should avoid putting excessive pressure on their children during preparation.
For backup school options in Lincolnshire, families should research other grammar schools in the Lincolnshire Consortium as well as high-performing comprehensive schools in the area. Families can appeal via an independent panel. Information about how to appeal will be sent by the local authority along with school offers on National Offers Day.

Lincolnshire 11+ Information
In order to get into King Edward VI Grammar School, children need to pass the Lincolnshire 11+. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.
Lincolnshire 11+ Subjects & Structure
The Lincolnshire 11+ requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:
- Verbal Reasoning
- Non-verbal Reasoning
- Spatial Reasoning
The 11 plus exam for King Edward VI Grammar School is administered by the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools. The assessment consists of two separate papers, each focusing on different cognitive abilities. The first paper evaluates the candidate's verbal reasoning skills through a series of 80 questions divided into 15 sections, with a time limit of 50 minutes.
The second paper concentrates on non-verbal and spatial reasoning abilities. This paper comprises 70 questions split across 5 individually timed sections. The invigilator is responsible for keeping track of the time for each section.

Lincolnshire 11+ Marking Process
The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as King Edward VI Grammar School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.
Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.
It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!
Lincolnshire 11+ Pass Mark
The pass mark for the Lincolnshire 11+ changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at King Edward VI Grammar School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
