How to get into Langley Grammar School

Langley Grammar School is a selective secondary school in Berkshire. To get into Langley Grammar School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into Langley Grammar School with all the important information you need to know.

Admission Requirements

Children born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2025 (see key dates). The school offers 180 places annually [1].

Families must achieve an eligibility score of 111 or above on the Slough Consortium 11+ examination. Pupils who score 111 or above will be in the top 35% of the cohort sitting the examination [1].

Children must be continuously resident at their application address from 1st May 2024 through the application deadline of 31st October 2024 (see key dates). Applicants for entry to Year 7 in September 2025 must be resident at that address on the closing date for the Common Application Form on 31st October 2024 and have been continuously resident at the same address since 1st May 2024 [1].

Priority Admission Areas

Langley Grammar School has three Priority Areas which are based on postcodes. These are used to allocate places at the school [1].

  • Priority Area 1:postcodes SL3 7, SL3 8, SL3 9, and SL3 0 (up to 100 places maximum)
  • Priority Area 2:SL0, SL1, SL2, SL3 (outside Priority Area 1), SL4, TW18, TW19, TW20, UB3, UB4, UB7, UB8, and UB10
  • Priority Area 3:SL5, SL6, SL7, SL8, SL9, TW3, TW4, TW5, TW7, TW13, TW14, TW15, UB1, UB2, UB5, UB6, UB9, HA1, HA2, HA3, HA4, HA5, HA6, W5, W7, W13, RG12, and RG42

Examination Details

The Slough Consortium of Grammar Schools has contracted with GL Assessment as the test provider for the 11+ examinations [1]. The examination takes place in September each year.

Pupils will sit two test papers, with questions covering a combination of verbal and non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics [1]. Each paper lasts approximately one hour including instructions and example questions.

  • Paper 1:Verbal Skills (English comprehension and verbal reasoning)
  • Paper 2:Non-Verbal Skills (mathematics and non-verbal reasoning)
  • Results released in mid-October (see key dates)
  • School offers announced in early March (see key dates)

Oversubscription Criteria

When more eligible children apply than places available, the school allocates places according to strict criteria in this order:

  • Looked after children and previously looked after children
  • Children with Education, Health and Care Plans naming the school
  • Priority Area 1 residents (up to 100 places), prioritised by Pupil Premium eligibility
  • Priority Area 2 residents with Pupil Premium eligibility
  • Staff children (employed at school for 2+ years)
  • Remaining Priority Area 2 residents ranked by examination performance
  • Priority Area 3 residents ranked by examination performance

Preparation Guidance

Families should establish a consistent preparation routine starting in Year 5 to build strong foundations. The school recommends beginning preparation at least 12 months before the examination date.

Effective preparation involves regular practice sessions focusing on all four examination areas. Children benefit from little and often study approaches rather than intensive cramming sessions.

  • Start preparation during Year 5 for gradual skill development
  • Practice verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and mathematics regularly
  • Use timed practice sessions to develop time management skills
  • For free preparation resources, visit practice papers section
  • For professional support, see tutoring guidance
  • Aim for consistently achieving 80%+ scores in practice tests

Key Dates and Events

Families should attend school events to understand the school environment and expectations. Open mornings and afternoons will also be offered in June/July 2025. These will be aimed primarily at parents of pupils currently in Year 5 [1].

The main Open Evening takes place in September each year (see key dates). Multiple Open Morning sessions are available in October for Year 6 families.

  • April/May:11+ registration portal opens
  • June/July:Open Morning sessions for Year 5 families
  • September:Annual Open Evening and 11+ examination
  • October:Open Morning sessions and examination results
  • 31st October:Common Application Form deadline - see key dates
  • March:School allocation results announced - see key dates

Practical Advice

Examination day preparation involves ensuring children arrive well-rested and confident. Families should visit the school beforehand through open events to familiarise children with the environment.

Children should practice working under timed conditions and develop strategies for managing examination stress. Regular sleep schedules and healthy breakfast routines support optimal performance.

  • Attend Open Evening and Open Morning sessions before applying
  • Practice examination technique under timed conditions
  • Maintain regular sleep schedules leading up to examination day
  • Prepare backup school applications in Berkshire and surrounding areas
  • Consider schools like Herschel Grammar School and Upton Court Grammar School
  • For appeals guidance, see information available from 31st March onwards - see key dates

Slough Consortium 11+ Information

In order to get into Langley Grammar School, children need to pass the Slough Consortium 11+. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Slough Consortium 11+ Subjects & Structure

The Slough Consortium 11+ requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Maths
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

The Slough Consortium 11 plus exam is a crucial assessment for students seeking admission to grammar schools in the UK, including Langley Grammar School. The exam comprises two papers, each lasting approximately one hour, which are provided by GL Assessment.

The first paper focuses on verbal skills, assessing the student's proficiency in English and verbal reasoning. The second paper evaluates non-verbal skills, including maths and non-verbal reasoning. Both papers are taken on the same day, with a brief intermission between them.

The exam format includes instructions, worked example questions (which are not marked), and the actual test questions. Successful performance in both papers is essential for securing a place at Langley Grammar School, as the 11 plus exam is a key component of the admissions process for most grammar schools in the UK.

Other Schools using Slough Consortium 11+

As well as Langley Grammar School, several other schools also use Slough Consortium 11+. These are:

Slough Consortium 11+ Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Langley Grammar School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Slough Consortium 11+ Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Slough Consortium 11+ changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Langley Grammar School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
