How to get into Queen Elizabeth's School

Queen Elizabeth's School is a selective secondary school in Barnet, London. To get into Queen Elizabeth's School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into Queen Elizabeth's School with all the important information you need to know.

Admission Requirements

Children born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2026 (see key dates). Queen Elizabeth's School offers 180 places annually for boys [1].

The school operates with no catchment area restrictions, meaning families from anywhere in London and surrounding areas can apply. The school does not accept external students into the Sixth Form [1].

Families must register their son for the QE Barnet 11+ entrance examination. Boys who achieve a combined score of 220 or higher are considered eligible for a place, though competition is extremely high with over 3,000 boys taking the test annually for just 180 places.

Application Process

Entrance test request forms for 2026 entry will be available on the school website from 1st May 2025 (see key dates). Families must return these forms by 11th July 2025 (see key dates) at midday [1].

The entrance tests will take place on 17th and 18th September 2025 (see key dates). Boys are assigned to one of these test dates by the school, and precise arrangements are confirmed approximately one week before [1].

  • Complete the entrance test request form available from 1st May 2025 on the school website
  • Return the form by 11th July 2025 at midday - see key dates
  • Attend the assigned test date in September 2025
  • Submit the Common Application Form through the local authority by 31st October 2025 - see key dates
  • Contact details available in the school information section

Exam Format and Requirements

The 11 plus papers are provided by GL Assessment and consist of two papers, each lasting approximately 50 minutes. All questions are multiple-choice format [1].

The QE Barnet 11+ covers two subjects:

  • English: Based on national curriculum content including reading comprehension tasks
  • Mathematics: Covers Key Stage 2 maths content up to Year 6 start, including number, measurement, geometry and statistics
  • Test papers are marked and age-standardised to ensure younger boys are not disadvantaged
  • Scores from both papers are combined to produce a single overall score

Preparation Guidance

Families should begin preparation early and follow a structured approach. Child psychologists recommend regular study sessions of 20-30 minutes for children aged 10-11. Using a 'little and often' approach helps brains encode information more effectively.

While Queen Elizabeth's School doesn't release past papers, GL Assessment offers familiarisation papers for both subjects. The school provides sample papers, though the actual format and difficulty may differ from these samples [1].

  • Ensure the child is well-rested before the exam date
  • Arrive early on the test day to reduce stress
  • Practice multiple-choice answer sheets beforehand
  • Consider backup grammar schools in Barnet and surrounding areas
  • Remember that passing the exam doesn't guarantee a place due to oversubscription
  • If unsuccessful, families may be placed on a waiting list
  • Contact the school at school information section for specific queries

QE Barnet 11+ Information

In order to get into Queen Elizabeth's School, children need to pass the QE Barnet 11+. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

QE Barnet 11+ Subjects & Structure

The QE Barnet 11+ requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths

The 11 plus entrance exam for Queen Elizabeth's School is a competitive assessment designed to evaluate the academic abilities of prospective students. The exam consists of two papers, each lasting approximately 50 minutes, which cover essential subjects in the national curriculum.

The English paper assesses the candidate's proficiency in the language, including their comprehension skills and understanding of key concepts taught in school. This section often features a reading comprehension task, requiring the student to demonstrate their ability to interpret and analyze written passages.

The Maths paper focuses on evaluating the candidate's mathematical aptitude, covering topics from the Key Stage 2 maths curriculum up to the beginning of Year 6. The questions in this section typically assess various aspects of number, measurement, geometry, and statistics, ensuring that the student possesses a solid foundation in these essential areas of mathematics.

QE Barnet 11+ Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Queen Elizabeth's School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

QE Barnet 11+ Pass Mark

The pass mark for the QE Barnet 11+ changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Queen Elizabeth's School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
