How to get into Royal Latin School

Royal Latin School is a selective secondary school in Buckinghamshire. To get into Royal Latin School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into Royal Latin School with all the important information you need to know.

Admission Requirements

The Royal Latin School is a selective Grammar school that requires students to satisfy academic criteria for entry. Students join Year 7 after taking the 11+ selection tests administered by Buckinghamshire Council [1].

Children born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2025 (see key dates). The school offers 174 places annually for Year 7 admission [1].

Children must achieve a minimum score of 121 in the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) or qualification by a Selection Review Panel. The STT assesses verbal, non-verbal and mathematical skills with age-standardised scoring. Families can also request a Selection Review if their child doesn't meet the score due to specific circumstances.

Application Process

Registration for children attending schools outside Buckinghamshire opens on Friday 2nd May 2025 and closes on Friday 13th June 2025 (see key dates). Children attending Buckinghamshire primary schools are automatically entered and do not need separate registration.

Secondary school application forms become available in early September 2025 and must be submitted by 31st October 2025 (see key dates) to the home local authority. Passing the entrance exam does not guarantee school placement as many grammar schools are oversubscribed with qualified children.

  • Complete the Common Application Form (CAF) through the local authority
  • Name Royal Latin School as a preferred choice on the application
  • Register for testing through the Grammar Schools and Transfer Test page on Buckinghamshire County website
  • Provide required documentation including proof of address and birth certificate
  • Contact details available in the school information section

Examination Details

A practice test takes place on Tuesday 9th September 2025, with the main Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test held on Thursday 11th September 2025 (see key dates). Test results are released after 4pm on Friday 10th October 2025 (see key dates).

The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test consists of two one-hour papers supplied by GL Assessment. Children take both papers on the same day with a short break in between. All questions are multiple-choice and answered on separate answer sheets.

  • Paper 1: English comprehension, technical English (grammar, punctuation, spelling) and verbal reasoning
  • Paper 2: Non-verbal reasoning, spatial reasoning and mathematics
  • Children at Buckinghamshire primary schools take tests at their current school
  • Children from other schools take tests at designated grammar school test centres
  • Each paper includes 15 minutes for introduction and practice examples, followed by 45 minutes of test questions

Oversubscription Criteria

The school operates specific oversubscription criteria to allocate places when more qualified children apply than places available. Places are prioritised in the following order:

  • Looked after children and previously looked after children
  • Up to 6 places reserved for children scoring 110-120 in the STT who are looked after, previously looked after, or live in catchment area and eligible for Pupil Premium
  • Siblings of children who have previously attended Royal Latin School
  • Children of staff members with two or more years permanent employment
  • Children with exceptional medical or social needs supported by written evidence
  • All remaining places offered in distance order, with priority to children living closest to the school

Preparation Guidance

The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test is designed to be difficult, requiring thorough preparation starting well in advance. Child psychologists recommend regular study sessions of 20-30 minutes for children aged 10-11.

Building a good knowledge base is essential, using a 'little and often' approach as brains encode information more effectively in smaller chunks. Families should begin preparation at least 12 months before the examination date.

  • Focus on verbal reasoning, comprehension and technical English skills
  • Develop non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning abilities
  • Strengthen mathematical problem-solving techniques
  • Practice with multiple-choice question formats and separate answer sheets
  • Use timed practice sessions to build exam confidence
  • For free practice papers: practice materials
  • For tutoring support: 11+ tutoring services

Practical Advice

The school hosts an 11+ Open Evening on Thursday 3rd July 2025 from 4.30pm to 8.00pm (see key dates). The Headteacher gives talks at 4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm with no booking required.

Families should prepare backup school options within Buckinghamshire, as grammar schools are often oversubscribed despite children achieving qualifying scores. School place allocations for September 2026 are confirmed on 2nd March 2026 (see key dates).

  • Visit the school during Open Evening to understand the environment
  • Ensure children have adequate sleep and healthy breakfast on exam day
  • Arrive at test venue early to reduce stress and allow settling time
  • Practice relaxation techniques to manage exam anxiety
  • Consider other Buckinghamshire grammar schools as alternative options
  • Understand the appeals process through Buckinghamshire Council if unsuccessful
  • For detailed contact information: school information section

Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Information

In order to get into Royal Latin School, children need to pass the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT). This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Subjects & Structure

The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English Comprehension
  • Technical English
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Key Stage 2 Maths
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning

The Secondary Transfer Test is an assessment used for admission into the Royal Latin School. This exam, provided by GL Assessment, evaluates a range of skills across two separate one-hour papers.

The first paper focuses on verbal abilities, assessing the candidate's proficiency in English comprehension, technical English, and verbal reasoning. The second paper concentrates on mathematical and non-verbal skills, testing the student's knowledge of Key Stage 2 maths, as well as their ability to solve non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning problems.

By examining a diverse set of subjects, the Secondary Transfer Test aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of a student's academic potential and suitability for the Royal Latin School's curriculum.

Other Schools using Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT)

As well as Royal Latin School, several other schools also use Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT). These are:

Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Royal Latin School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Royal Latin School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
