Admission Requirements

Children born between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2026 (see key dates) . Skegness Grammar School offers 132 places annually and admits pupils who achieve scores in the top 25% of the ability range in Lincolnshire [1].

The examinations take place on consecutive Saturdays in September 2025. The Verbal Reasoning paper occurs on Saturday 13th September 2025, followed by the Non-verbal Reasoning paper on Saturday 20th September 2025 (see key dates).

Scoring and Selection Criteria

Grammar schools in the consortium typically select children working within the top 25% of their year group. Children who achieve a total standardised score of 220 or above are likely to be working within this range based on national data.

If more than 132 children applying to Skegness Grammar School achieve the qualifying score, the school applies oversubscription criteria. Places are prioritised in the following order: looked after and previously looked after children, siblings of current pupils, children within the designated area for free transport, and all other eligible children based on distance.

  • Looked after and previously looked after children receive highest priority
  • Siblings of current students who will still be attending the school
  • Children within the designated transport area with distance-based priority
  • All other eligible children prioritised by distance from the school

Preparation Guidance

Families should begin preparation during Year 5 to allow sufficient time for skill development. Child psychologists recommend regular study sessions of 20-30 minutes for children aged 10-11, focusing on verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills.

The consortium schools consider their familiarisation tests sufficient preparation, though additional practice papers are available from GL Assessment. For comprehensive preparation resources, families should refer to practice papers.

  • Start preparation in Year 5 with consistent practice sessions
  • Focus on verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning skills
  • Utilise free familiarisation papers from schools and GL Assessment
  • Consider professional support through specialist tutoring
  • Attend familiarisation sessions offered by grammar schools

Practical Advice for Exam Day

Ensure children arrive at the test venue early and bring required identification documents. Students are not permitted to bring watches into examinations, as reliable clocks will be visible in each examination room.

On exam day, children should eat a nutritious breakfast and remain calm and focused. Families should prepare backup transport arrangements and arrive at the venue with sufficient time before the examination begins.

  • Arrive at the test venue 30 minutes early to avoid delays
  • Bring required identification documents and examination materials
  • Ensure children have a nutritious breakfast before the test
  • Do not bring watches or timing devices to the examination
  • Prepare backup transport arrangements in case of delays
  • Encourage children to stay calm and focused during the test

Appeals and Alternative Options

Families can appeal via an independent panel if their child is not offered a place. Information about appeals is sent by the local authority with school offers on National Offers Day in March 2026 (see key dates).

Lincolnshire 11+ Information

In order to get into Skegness Grammar School, children need to pass the Lincolnshire 11+. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Lincolnshire 11+ Subjects & Structure

The Lincolnshire 11+ requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-verbal Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning

The 11 plus exam for Skegness Grammar School is administered by the Lincolnshire Consortium of Grammar Schools. The assessment consists of two separate papers that evaluate a student's abilities in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and spatial reasoning.

The first paper focuses on verbal reasoning and includes 80 questions divided into 15 sections, with a time limit of 50 minutes. The second paper assesses non-verbal and spatial reasoning through 70 questions split across 5 individually timed sections.

All questions in the Lincolnshire 11 plus are presented in a multiple-choice format, and students record their answers on separate answer sheets that are electronically marked. This rigorous examination process helps identify students with the aptitude and potential to excel at Skegness Grammar School.

Other Schools using Lincolnshire 11+

As well as Skegness Grammar School, several other schools also use Lincolnshire 11+. These are:

Lincolnshire 11+ Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Skegness Grammar School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Lincolnshire 11+ Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Lincolnshire 11+ changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Skegness Grammar School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
