How to get into The Judd School

The Judd School is a selective secondary school in Kent. To get into The Judd School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into The Judd School with all the important information you need to know.

School Overview

The Judd School, established in 1888 in Tonbridge, Kent, is a selective grammar school for boys aged 11–18, with a co-educational Sixth Form [1]. The school offers 180 places annually, with 157 places allocated to families living in the Inner Area and 23 places for the Outer Area [1]. The school is renowned for its academic excellence and offers a broad curriculum, including specialisms in Music and Mathematics [1].

Admission Requirements

Children currently in Year 5 who were born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015 can take the Kent Test in 2025 for entry to Year 7 in September 2026. Families must ensure their child takes the Kent Test to be eligible for admission.

Children need a total score of 332 or higher and no single score lower than 107 to qualify for a place at a Kent grammar school. In order to pass the exam, the child's standardised score must be over 109 and their total score must be 332 or more.

The school prioritises children who live in its 'inner area', which is defined by the following postcodes: TN1, TN2, TN3, TN4, TN8, TN9, TN10, TN11, TN12, TN13, TN14, TN15; ME18, ME19; TN16 1** and TN16 2** (not TN16 3** or TN16 9**); DA4 0** (not DA4 9**) [1]. Plus the civil parish of Halstead (where this is not included above).

Application Process

Registration for the 2025 Kent Test opens on Monday 2nd June 2025 and closes on Tuesday 1st July 2025 (see key dates). Kent County Council cannot accept late registrations.

To apply, families need to name the school as one of their preferred schools on the secondary school common application form. This will be available on the home council website from early September and must be submitted by Friday 31st October 2025 (see key dates) [1].

Families need to complete the following steps:

  • Register the child for the Kent Test through the Kent County Council website
  • Complete the Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) through the local authority
  • Submit all applications by the 31st October 2025 deadline (see key dates)
  • For specific guidance contact the school information section

Test Format and Content

The Judd School follows the Kent 11 Plus exam for Year 7 admission. The Kent Test is made up of two multiple-choice papers and a short writing task.

The first test will be an English and maths paper and will take 1 hour. Each section will involve a 5 minute practice exercise followed by a 25 minute test. The second test is a one-hour exam that aims to evaluate Reasoning abilities. It is broken down into three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

All children also complete a short creative writing exercise. This isn't marked as part of the main test, but it might be used if the child's results are reviewed by a headteacher panel or at appeal stage.

Important Dates

Registration for the 2025 Kent Test opens on Monday 2nd June 2025 and closes on Tuesday 1st July 2025 (see key dates). The Kent Test date for children in Kent primary schools is Thursday 11th September 2025, while the Kent Test date for children not in Kent primary schools is Saturday 13th – Sunday 14th September 2025 (see key dates).

Results will be emailed on Thursday 16th October 2025 (see key dates) to families who provide an email address. National Offer Day is Monday 3rd March 2025 (see key dates) when 180 offers will be made [1].

Preparation Guidance

Families should begin preparation at least one year before the test date. Children should have a good understanding of Year 6 content before testing their knowledge with practice papers.

Using a 'little and often' approach when recapping content is key, as our brains encode new information more effectively when dealing with smaller 'chunks' of information. Based on historical data, students who are able to score 75%+ consistently in 11+ Kent practice tests are on track to pass The Judd School Test.

For preparation resources, families should access practice papers and consider professional support through tutoring services. Verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning topics aren't usually taught in school. They're included in the test to measure the child's potential, not just what they've learned so far.

Waiting List and Appeals

Families who have applied for a place at The Judd School and have not been successful may join the waiting list, provided they have a selective score on the Kent Test [1]. The waiting list for Year 7 entry will be maintained until the end of January 2025 and will be re-ranked every time a student joins or leaves the list [1].

The Kent deadline for waiting list requests is 17 March 2025 – a first round of waiting list offers will then be made on 24 April 2025 (see key dates) [1]. Last year around 10 offers were made from the waiting list – the majority in late April [1].

There was a total of 1 appeal upheld in 2024, 7 appeals upheld in 2023, 4 upheld in 2022 and 8 upheld in 2021 [1]. Families considering appeals should contact the school information section for detailed guidance.

Practical Advice

Passing the 11 plus doesn't guarantee that a child will be allocated a place at their preferred school. Many grammar schools are often oversubscribed with qualified children. Families should prepare backup school options within Kent.

Success in the 11+ isn't just about knowledge; it's also about mindset. Families should praise children for their effort, not just their results. When children face a tricky topic or make a mistake, remind them that every challenge is a chance to learn and grow.

If a child has a disability or special educational needs which will affect their access to testing, families need to discuss this with their primary school's special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) before they register them for the test. Requests will not be accepted after 1 July 2025 (see key dates).

For specific admissions queries and detailed contact information, families should refer to the school information section.

Kent 11+ Test Information

In order to get into The Judd School, children need to pass the Kent 11+ Test. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Kent 11+ Test Subjects & Structure

The Kent 11+ Test requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning

The Kent Test, administered by GL Assessment, is the entrance examination for admission to The Judd School. This assessment comprises two multiple-choice papers, each lasting one hour. The first paper evaluates the candidate's proficiency in English and maths, with questions based on the Key Stage 2 national curriculum.

The second paper assesses the student's aptitude in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and spatial reasoning. These subjects are not typically covered in the school curriculum, so candidates may be less familiar with the question formats encountered in this section of the test.

The Kent Test aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of a child's academic abilities and potential, helping The Judd School select students who are best suited for their educational environment.

Other Schools using Kent 11+ Test

As well as The Judd School, several other schools also use Kent 11+ Test. These are:

Kent 11+ Test Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as The Judd School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Kent 11+ Test Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Kent 11+ Test changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at The Judd School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
