  • Submit the Common Application Form through the local authority by 31st October 2025 (see key dates)
  • Name The Latymer School as a preferred choice on the application form
  • Ensure all documents are submitted before the stated deadlines
  • Contact the school for special considerations if needed - see school information section

The The Latymer School 11+ consists of two separate test papers. Part One includes Mathematics and Verbal Reasoning, with all applicants invited to take this multiple-choice test lasting around 60 minutes. Part Two is the English test split into two sections: reading comprehension lasting 30 minutes, and a written paper requiring creative writing lasting 30 minutes.

The maths and verbal reasoning test is set by GL Assessment, while the English paper is set by The Latymer School. The total testing time is approximately two hours across both papers.

Results and Selection Process

Families will receive their child's results in Late October 2025 (see key dates) [1]. Results will be emailed to parents before the 31 October each year [1].

The school uses a two-stage marking process. The Maths and Verbal Reasoning test will be marked first, with only the top-scoring 650 candidates eligible to have their English paper marked, and places offered to the top 192 candidates based on their total score. Children ranked between 1 and 700 have their English papers marked by The Latymer School, with the English mark added to produce re-standardised results for the top 700 children.

Children whose rank in the maths and verbal reasoning test is below 700 are not eligible for a place, and their English papers will not be marked. School allocations are announced on Monday 2nd March 2026 (see key dates).

Oversubscription Criteria

If more than 192 eligible children name The Latymer School as their preferred school on their application form, the school applies oversubscription criteria [1]. The school only admits children who live within the Inner Area [1].

Priority is given to specific groups within the Inner Area. Children are prioritised in the following order: Looked after and previously looked after children (within the top 900), up to 20 places for children who receive Free School Meals/Universal Credit (within the top 900), and up to 20 places for children with musical talent. Families should contact the school directly for complete oversubscription criteria details - see school information section.

Preparation Guidance

Families should begin preparation approximately 12 months before the exam. The school recommends a little and often approach to learning, with smaller chunks of information being more effectively encoded by the brain. Pupils who are able to score 85%+ consistently in practice tests should be on track to pass the assessment.

For comprehensive preparation support, families should access practice 11+ papers to familiarize children with exam formats. Professional tutoring guidance is available through 11+ tutor services. Practice tests help children become familiar with question types and exam format, boosting confidence and ensuring efficient responses under time pressure.

  • Start preparation one year before the examination date
  • Use little and often study sessions for better retention
  • Focus on achieving 85%+ scores in practice tests consistently
  • Practice both multiple-choice and written answer formats
  • Develop time management skills for exam conditions
  • Access free preparation materials through practice papers
  • Consider professional support via qualified tutors

Practical Advice

On exam day, children should arrive well-prepared and calm. Invitations are normally emailed to parents at least seven days before the test takes place [1]. Families should ensure children get adequate rest before the examination and arrive punctually on their assigned day.

The school conducts examinations across three separate days in September, with children invited to attend one specific day. Parents should prepare backup school options within the North London area, as passing the 11 plus doesn't guarantee place allocation, with many grammar schools often oversubscribed with qualified children.

  • Ensure children get adequate sleep before the exam day
  • Arrive punctually on the assigned examination day
  • Bring required identification documents and stationery
  • Prepare backup school choices in North London
  • Consider other grammar schools like Dame Alice Owen's School and St Olave's Grammar School
  • Review exam day guidance provided by the school
  • Contact the school for specific queries - see school information section

The Latymer School 11+ Information

In order to get into The Latymer School, children need to pass the The Latymer School 11+. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

The Latymer School 11+ Subjects & Structure

The The Latymer School 11+ requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • Maths
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • English Comprehension
  • Creative Writing

The 11+ entrance exam for The Latymer School consists of two papers, each lasting 60 minutes. The first paper, set by GL Assessment, is divided into two sections: Maths and Verbal Reasoning. The Maths section assesses the child's understanding of Key Stage 2 maths curriculum content, while the Verbal Reasoning section evaluates their ability to solve problems using logic and written information. Both sections feature multiple-choice questions.

The second paper, set by The Latymer School, focuses on English skills. It is split into two parts: English Comprehension and Creative Writing. In the comprehension section, children are required to read a passage and answer questions based on the text. The Creative Writing section tests the child's ability to write effectively, with attention to spelling, punctuation, grammar, and creativity.

The 11+ exam for The Latymer School is designed to assess a child's academic potential and suitability for the school's curriculum. Success in this exam is a key factor in securing a place at this prestigious institution.

The Latymer School 11+ Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as The Latymer School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

The Latymer School 11+ Pass Mark

The pass mark for the The Latymer School 11+ changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at The Latymer School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
