Admissions Criteria Priority Order

Many grammar schools are oversubscribed with qualified children, so schools use admissions criteria to prioritise children for places. Wilmington Grammar School for Girls uses the following priority order:

  • 1. Children with Special Educational Needs or Education Health Care Plans naming the school
  • 2. Girls with siblings at WGSG or Wilmington Grammar School for Boys
  • 3. Children of school staff employed for two or more years
  • 4. Governor places: 18 highest-scoring girls in maths paper living within 5 miles
  • 5. Girls within 1.5 miles or priority parishes, with Pupil Premium children given priority
  • 6. Other Pupil Premium children within 3 miles of school
  • 7. All other eligible girls ranked by distance from home to school

Priority Parishes and Wards

The school prioritises girls living in specific parishes and wards including: Ash Cum Ridley, Badgers Mount, Bean, Crockenhill, Darenth, Dartford, Dunton Green, Eynsford, Farningham, Fawkham, Halstead, Hartley, Hextable, Horton Kirby & South Darenth, Istead Rise, Kemsing, Longfield & New Barn, Meopham, Otford, Shoreham, Southfleet, Stanstead, Stone, Sutton at Hone & Hawley, Swanley, Swanscome & Greenhithe, West Kingsdown, Wilmington, and Wrotham.

Families should check the official admissions policy for complete catchment area maps and detailed criteria information. Contact details available in school information section.

Preparation Guidance

Children should have good understanding of Year 6 content before attempting practice papers, using 'little and often' approach for effective learning. Educational psychologists recommend daily learning sessions of 20-30 minutes for 10-11 year olds.

Many children find the test difficult, so families should discuss their daughter's academic achievement with primary school before registering. Schools recommend starting preparation approximately one year before the examination.

  • Focus on Key Stage 2 English and Mathematics curriculum
  • Practice verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and spatial reasoning
  • Avoid jumping straight into practice papers without understanding core content
  • Use familiarisation materials from Kent County Council website
  • For free practice resources, see 11+ practice papers
  • For tutoring guidance, see 11+ tutor recommendations
  • Maintain consistent daily study routine leading up to examination

Appeals Process

Families can appeal if refused a place on National Offer Day (Monday 3rd March 2025) (see key dates). Appeals must be submitted before 4pm on Wednesday 2nd April 2025 for first tranche consideration (see key dates).

Families can only submit appeals if they named WGSG on their SCAF by 31st October 2025 (see key dates). Late appeals may not be heard until second tranche in September 2025.

  • Complete appeal form online through school's specific process [1]
  • Do not use other appeal forms or send to local authority [1]
  • Must state appeal reasons and provide documentary evidence when submitting [1]
  • Upload two recent utility bills (within three months) or photographs if no scanner available [1]
  • Families may appeal for multiple schools [1]

Practical Advice

Passing the Kent Test does not guarantee a place, so families should research Kent grammar school locations and specific admissions criteria. Many grammar schools are oversubscribed with qualified children.

Families should prepare backup school options and ensure daughters understand that grammar school is one pathway among many excellent educational choices. The school also offers in-year admissions through IYCAF for Years 7 and 8 when places become available [1].

Kent 11+ Test Information

In order to get into Wilmington Grammar School for Girls, children need to pass the Kent 11+ Test. This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.

Kent 11+ Test Subjects & Structure

The Kent 11+ Test requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Non-Verbal Reasoning
  • Spatial Reasoning

The entrance examination for Wilmington Grammar School for Girls is known as the Kent Test. This assessment, provided by GL Assessment, consists of two multiple-choice papers that evaluate a student's abilities in various subjects.

The first paper, which lasts for one hour, focuses on English and maths. The questions in this section are based on the national curriculum taught in Key Stage 2. The second paper, also one hour long, assesses a student's skills in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, and spatial reasoning. These subjects are not typically taught in schools, so students may be less familiar with the question styles encountered in this section.

By testing a range of subjects and skills, the Kent Test aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of a student's academic potential and suitability for attending Wilmington Grammar School for Girls.

Other Schools using Kent 11+ Test

As well as Wilmington Grammar School for Girls, several other schools also use Kent 11+ Test. These are:

Kent 11+ Test Marking Process

The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Wilmington Grammar School for Girls is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.

Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.
Most 11+ tests are multiple-choice and marked electronically but still some remain that are marked by teachers or examiners.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.

It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!

Kent 11+ Test Pass Mark

The pass mark for the Kent 11+ Test changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.
Stop worrying! Once the 11+ marking has started the admissions process is out of your control.

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Wilmington Grammar School for Girls, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
