How to get into Wycombe High School
Wycombe High School is a selective secondary school in Buckinghamshire. To get into Wycombe High School children need to pass the school's 11+ entrance test. Here is the step-by-step guide to getting your child into Wycombe High School with all the important information you need to know.
Background and Overview
Wycombe High School is an all-girls grammar school situated in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. It was established in 1901 with only 18 students and 3 staff members. Presently, the school has more than 1300 enrolled pupils and has achieved academy status. If more than 192 children applying to Wycombe High School achieve a score of 121 or higher, the school applies oversubscription criteria [1].
Admission to the school depends on girls' performance in the Secondary Transfer Test. Wycombe High School is a selective school. This means that your child will need to take the 11 plus exam to be eligible for a place. In Buckinghamshire, the 11 plus is known as the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test.
Age Requirements and Eligibility
Children born between 1st September 2013 and 31st August 2014 are eligible for Year 7 entry in September 2025 (see key dates). Wycombe High School determines Year 7 entry on the basis of pupil performance in the 11 Plus Secondary Transfer Test. The test is produced by GL Assessment and administered by Buckinghamshire County Council as part of its Coordinated Admissions Scheme.

In the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test, your child will need to achieve an STT score of 121 or above. Entry to a Buckinghamshire grammar school is entirely dependent on whether your child achieves this score. Children who achieve a standardised score of at least 121 are eligible to be considered for a Buckinghamshire grammar school place. We call these children qualified. Children who score less than 121 are usually not eligible to be considered for a grammar school. These children are not qualified.
Catchment Area
This is separated into Catchment Area A (consisting of areas including High Wycombe, Marlow and Stokenchurch) and Catchment Area B (consisting of areas including Maidenhead and some of the surrounding area). A map is available in the school admissions policy [1].
Yes, Wycombe High School does have a catchment area, split into two sections. Pupils from Catchment Area A have priority over pupils from Catchment Area B. All applications offered under rule 2 (qualified disadvantaged girls), rule 3 (catchment), and some allocated under rule 9 (distance) to 11.73 miles.

Registration for the Secondary Transfer Test
All children who go to a primary school in Buckinghamshire are entered to take the test. This means that you will not need to register your child separately. Girls who attend a state funded Buckinghamshire primary school will be automatically registered to sit the 11 Plus Secondary Transfer Test for Year 7 entry.
If your child goes to a primary school outside of Buckinghamshire, you'll need to register them to take the test. Registration for the 2025 exam opens on Friday 2nd May 2025 and closes on Friday 13th June 2025 (see key dates). If your child does not go to a primary school in Buckinghamshire, you will need to register them to take the Buckinghamshire Transfer Test. Registration opens on the Buckinghamshire Council website on Friday 2nd May 2025 and closes on Friday 13th June 2025. Your child will then be invited to take the test at one of the Buckinghamshire grammar schools.
Key Exam Dates
9 September 2025 – Children sit the Practice Test. 11 September 2025 – Children sit the Secondary Transfer Test (see key dates). A practice test will take place on Tuesday 9th September 2025, and the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test will be held on Thursday 11th September. If your child attends a Buckinghamshire primary school, they will take both the practice test and the exam at their school.

You'll find out if your child has met the eligible score in the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test on Friday 10th October 2025 (see key dates). Most parents will be informed of their child's Secondary Transfer Test result by email, after 4pm on 10 October 2025.
Application Process
You can then use these results to decide whether to apply for a place at Wycombe High School. To apply, you'll need to name the school as one of your preferred schools on the secondary school common application form. This will be available on your home council website from early September and must be submitted by 31st October 2025 (see key dates).
Remember – passing the entrance exam doesn't guarantee that your child will be allocated a place at your preferred school. Many grammar schools are often oversubscribed with qualified children. Schools and their admissions authorities work through admissions criteria to prioritise children for places.
Please note that applicants who fall into one of the following categories: Looked After Child (LAC), Post-LAC, IAC, IAPLAC and/or girls in receipt of Pupil Premium should complete the Supplementary Information Form below and return it to Wycombe High School. Further details can be found in our Determined Admissions Policy for September 2025 entry [1].
Oversubscription Criteria
Children are prioritised for places in the following order: ... Up to 12 places are available for qualified disadvantaged girls, who live in the catchment area and receive pupil premium or are looked after/previously looked after children, who achieved a score of 113–120 in the Secondary Transfer Test ... Sisters of boys on roll at John Hampden Grammar School, and who live in the Wycombe High School catchment area · Daughters of staff who work at Wycombe High School and who have been employed for at least two years · Girls who have exceptional medical or social needs which can only be met at Wycombe High School.
In cases where there are more successful applicants than available Year 7 places at Wycombe High School, the following oversubscription criteria are applied, giving priority to: ... Girls living in the Area A catchment area who achieved a high score in the STT and are in receipt of Pupil Premium, Free School Meals or are eligible for Service Premium · Daughter/s of a member of Wycombe High School staff · Girls who have a sister that attends the school and lives in Area B catchment area · Girls who achieved a high score in the STT and are in receipt of Pupil Premium, Free School Meals or are eligible for Service Premium.
The Examination Format
The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test is split into two papers that test: Comprehension, technical English and Verbal Reasoning · Non-Verbal Reasoning, Spatial Reasoning and Mathematics · Each test paper lasts for approximately 45 minutes, and all questions are multiple-choice. The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test consists of two one-hour papers.
Each child's score is standardised to account for their age when the test was taken, and then weighted according to the different sections of the test (verbal, mathematical and non-verbal skills). The STTS will be the sum of the following: 50% of the standardised score for verbal skills · 25% of the standardised score for mathematical skills · 25% of the standardised score for non-verbal skills.
Preparation Guidance
It's important to build a good knowledge base before the test. Using a 'little and often' approach when learning is key – our brains encode new information more effectively when dealing with smaller 'chunks' of information. For children aged 10–11, child psychologists recommend regular study sessions of 20–30 minutes.
There are several things that parents can do to help their children: make sure your child has experience of working quietly on their own. Make sure there are no distractions or interruptions · make sure your child does any homework that is set.
For free practice materials, families should visit free practice papers. For professional tutoring support, guidance is available through 11+ tutoring services.
Practice Test Information
The practice test will help your child to become familiar with the different sorts of questions and the style of the test. Your child will also get used to using a separate answer sheet. Your child will experience this under test conditions.
The purpose of the Practice Test is not to see how well your child has done. It is to give your child a good opportunity to prepare for the Secondary Transfer Test. We recommended your child takes the practice test before the Secondary Transfer Test but it is not compulsory.
Open Events and School Visits
Families are encouraged to visit Wycombe High School before applying for a Year 7 place. The school's open events usually take place in July and October, providing opportunities for you and your child to tour the school, talk to staff members and meet current pupils.
Our next Open Morning event will take place in October 2025. If you would like to be notified when registration for this event goes live, please email admissions@whs.bucks.sch.uk and ask for your name to be added to our contact list [1].
Additional Information and Special Circumstances
If your child doesn't meet the exam's required score because of exceptional circumstances, you can seek a Selection Review. This process involves a panel endorsed by the Local Authority examining each situation individually. These reviews are completed before assigning grammar places.
If your child qualifies but does not go to one of our grammar schools at the start of Year 7, that qualification will eventually lapse. Usually this happens in the school year starting in September 2026 but you should check the admission policy for the school you are interested in to find out.
For specific contact information about admissions queries, families should refer to the school information section. All matters regarding admissions are governed by the appropriate Determined Admissions Policy. All matters regarding transition to secondary school are administered by Buckinghamshire Council [1].
Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Information
In order to get into Wycombe High School, children need to pass the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT). This 11+ test is written by GL Assessment for use by the school's admissions process.
Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Subjects & Structure
The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) requires children to complete tests in the following subjects:
- English Comprehension
- Technical English
- Verbal Reasoning
- Key Stage 2 Maths
- Non-Verbal Reasoning
- Spatial Reasoning
The Secondary Transfer Test is a crucial assessment for students seeking admission to Wycombe High School. This exam, provided by GL Assessment, evaluates a range of skills across two distinct one-hour papers. Verbal abilities, including comprehension, technical proficiency, and reasoning, are thoroughly assessed in one paper. The other paper focuses on mathematical aptitude, along with non-verbal and spatial reasoning skills.
To excel in the Secondary Transfer Test, students must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Key Stage 2 maths concepts and exhibit strong problem-solving abilities. Additionally, a solid grasp of the English language, including technical vocabulary and comprehension skills, is essential for success in the verbal section.
By assessing a diverse set of skills, the Secondary Transfer Test aims to identify students who possess the academic potential to thrive at Wycombe High School. Those who perform well in both papers showcase a balanced skill set and the ability to adapt to the rigorous educational environment offered by this prestigious institution.

Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Marking Process
The reality of 11+ tests, selective education and academic institutions such as Wycombe High School is that only children with particularly high marks are admitted. Hence why it is important that children perform well in their 11+ papers.
Different schools (and different 11+ tests) have different marking processes. Some tests are marked in person, some remotely, while others utilise computer-based optical recognition technologies for quickly marking multiple-choice answer sheets.

Many 11+ tests are age-standardised to ensure younger children are not disadvantaged (i.e. their marks may be moderated depending on the month in which they were born). While creative writing papers can be used as tie-breakers, multiple-choice tests in Maths, Comprehension, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning normally make up the bulk of a child's marks. The specific details and weightings can vary from year to year.
It's worth remembering that once children's 11+ tests are being marked, the admissions process is completely outside of the parents' control. Hence, parents should not worry themselves about whether their child has got a place!
Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) Pass Mark
The pass mark for the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test (STT) changes every year and isn't generally made public knowledge. This is due to the academic strength of the children taking the test varying and how challenging the test ends up being (as well as plenty of other smaller variables).

Hence, as a vague rule-of-thumb, it's recommended that children aim for roughly 75-80% in their practice tests. Whilst this won't guarantee them a place at Wycombe High School, it's a ballpark exam result figure for successful candidates.
