What Was in the 2022 KS2 SATs?

2022 KS2 English Reading Paper

The 2022 Key Stage 2 English reading assessment contains three texts for comprehension testing. The Parsnips is a fiction extract following Veronika and her football team as they head to a tournament. My Circus Life presents a non-fiction interview with circus performer Vladik Miagkostoupov about his career as a juggler and acrobat. A Traveller in Time features a historical fiction passage where young Penelope encounters a mysterious lady on her staircase in early 20th century England.

The accompanying answer booklet includes 35 questions that assess various reading comprehension skills across the three texts. Questions test students' abilities in retrieval of information, inference making, and vocabulary understanding. The assessment also covers summarising skills and analysis of authorial choices, including how writers create atmosphere and develop characterisation. The questions are distributed across all three texts to provide comprehensive coverage of different literary forms and reading strategies.

2022 KS2 Maths Papers

The 2022 Key Stage 2 Mathematics assessments consisted of three papers testing different aspects of mathematical understanding. Paper 1 focused on arithmetic skills, covering addition and subtraction with whole numbers and decimals, multiplication and division methods, fraction operations, percentages of quantities, and place value work. The two reasoning papers assessed problem-solving abilities through multi-step word problems involving money, time, distance, and measurement, alongside data interpretation tasks using pictograms and line graphs.

Paper 2 and Paper 3 contained questions on geometric concepts including 3D shape properties, coordinates, angles, and transformations. Students worked with number operations, fraction-decimal-percentage conversions, Roman numerals, factors and prime numbers, and algebraic thinking through pattern rules. The assessments included measurement topics such as area, perimeter, volume, unit conversions, and temperature with negative numbers, plus statistical concepts like mean averages and ratio problems requiring mathematical reasoning.

2022 KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2022 Key Stage 2 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling papers consist of two distinct assessments that test different aspects of language skills. Paper 1 focuses on grammatical knowledge and includes questions about punctuation marks such as commas, colons, semi-colons, dashes, apostrophes, and question marks. Students demonstrate their understanding of word classes including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions. The paper also covers verb forms and tenses, sentence types and clauses, prefixes and suffixes, synonyms and antonyms, and Standard English usage.

Paper 2 is a dedicated spelling test containing twenty sentences with missing words that students must complete with correct spellings. The test covers various spelling patterns and rules, including homophones, suffixes, prefixes, and commonly misspelled words. Students write their answers directly into blank spaces within the provided sentences. Together, these papers assess both technical grammar knowledge and practical spelling ability, testing students' understanding of English language conventions and their ability to apply correct spelling in context.

About the 2022 KS2 SATs

Children in Year 6 (those aged 10-11 at the time) took their KS2 SATs tests in May 2022. The exams started on Monday 9th May 2022 and took place over four days.

The 2022 KS2 SATs were authored, produced and managed by the STA (Standards and Testing Agency) under the authorisation of the DfE (Department for Education).

The 2022 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.
The 2022 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.

KS2 SATs were taken in Maths, Reading and GaPS under formal exam conditions. These papers were marked externally whilst separate teacher assessments in Writing and Science were marked by their teachers.

Pupils with additional educational needs were offered support and/or extra exam time where available. Modified materials using braille and large print were available to eligible pupils and their teachers.

2022 was the fifth year of 'new-style' KS2 SATs tests under the new national curriculum, after the cancellation of the 2020 and 2021 tests due to coronavirus.

To help prepare children for the 2022 KS2 SATs, children were able to download test papers from previous years free of charge. Whilst not working to the same curriculum, KS2 SATs Papers from 2015 (and before) were still useful to aid preparation.

The 2022 SATs took place under exam conditions and were marked externally.
The 2022 SATs took place under exam conditions and were marked externally.

Once marked, children's scores were converted to scaled scores:

  • If a child's scaled score was below 100, they had not reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's scaled score was between 100 and 109, they had reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's score was 110 or over, they had exceeded the expected standard and were judged as working at greater depth.
