What Was in the 2024 KS2 SATs?

2024 KS2 English Reading Paper

The 2024 KS2 English reading assessment contains three texts across different genres and formats. Streaky and Squeaky is a non-fiction article about lowland streaked tenrecs, unusual animals found in Madagascar's rainforests. The Girl who Walked on Air presents a narrative extract following Louie as she demonstrates her tightrope-walking skills to her friend Ned for the first time. The Leopard features a memoir by Ruskin Bond recounting his encounters with a leopard in the forests near Mussoorie, India.

The Reading Answer Booklet contains 39 questions that assess students across the three texts. The assessment tests core reading skills including retrieval of information, inference, vocabulary understanding, and general comprehension abilities. Questions cover the non-fiction content about Madagascar's wildlife, the fictional narrative about tightrope walking, and Bond's autobiographical account of wildlife encounters in Indian forests. The format allows students to demonstrate their understanding across different text types and literary forms.

2024 KS2 Maths Papers

The 2024 Key Stage 2 Mathematics assessment consists of three papers testing different mathematical skills and knowledge areas. Paper 1 focuses on arithmetic calculations without a calculator, covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Students complete 36 questions involving place value, percentages, long multiplication and division, and calculations with mixed numbers and common fractions. Three questions require formal written methods to demonstrate calculation processes.

Papers 2 and 3 assess mathematical reasoning and problem-solving across multiple curriculum areas. Topics include geometry and shapes with reflections, coordinates, translation, perimeter, and angles, alongside number operations covering prime numbers, negative numbers, and algebraic expressions. Students work with fractions and percentages, measurements involving mass, time, and distance, plus data handling through graphs, pie charts, and mean averages. Both papers feature word problems requiring multi-step calculations and mathematical reasoning skills.

2024 KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2024 Key Stage 2 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling assessment consists of two papers that test different aspects of English language skills. Paper 1 covers punctuation marks including question marks, commas, apostrophes, colons, semi-colons, brackets and dashes. It assesses understanding of sentence types such as commands, questions and exclamations, alongside verb forms including simple past, past progressive and passive voice. The paper also tests knowledge of word classes including nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and modal verbs.

Paper 1 further examines grammatical structures including noun phrases, relative clauses, subordinate clauses and adverbials. It tests vocabulary skills through synonyms, antonyms and prefixes, while assessing understanding of formal versus informal language and Standard versus non-Standard English. Paper 2 focuses specifically on spelling accuracy through twenty words presented in sentence contexts. This paper tests spelling across various word types including those with common spelling patterns, homophones, prefixes, suffixes and subject-specific vocabulary.

About the 2024 KS2 SATs

Children in Year 6 (those aged 10-11 at the time) took their KS2 SATs tests in May 2024. The exams started on Monday 13th May 2024 and took place over four days.

The 2024 KS2 SATs were authored, produced and managed by the STA (Standards and Testing Agency) under the authorisation of the DfE (Department for Education).

The 2024 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.
The 2024 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.

KS2 SATs were taken in Maths, Reading and GaPS under formal exam conditions. These papers were marked externally whilst separate teacher assessments in Writing and Science were marked by their teachers.

Pupils with additional educational needs were offered support and/or extra exam time where available. Modified materials using braille and large print were available to eligible pupils and their teachers.

2024 was the seventh year of 'new-style' KS2 SATs tests under the new national curriculum.

To help prepare children for the 2024 KS2 SATs, children were able to download test papers from previous years free of charge. Whilst not working to the same curriculum, KS2 SATs Papers from 2015 (and before) were still useful to aid preparation.

The 2024 SATs took place under exam conditions and were marked externally.

Once marked, children's scores were converted to scaled scores:

  • If a child's scaled score was below 100, they had not reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's scaled score was between 100 and 109, they had reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's score was 110 or over, they had exceeded the expected standard and were judged as working at greater depth.

2024 KS1 English Reading Papers

The 2024 KS1 English Reading assessment contains two separate booklets with different text combinations. Reading Booklet 1 features a non-fiction text about spider monkeys covering their habitat, diet, movement, and social behavior, alongside a fictional story called Izzy's Talent about a girl discovering her comedic abilities for a school talent show. Reading Booklet 2 includes a non-fiction text on The History of Hats examining different hat types and social customs throughout history, paired with Come on, Tiger Tom, a fiction story about a tiger cub who becomes lost while exploring.

The assessment tests pupils' comprehension skills through 17 questions contained in the answer booklet, which corresponds to Reading Booklet 2. Questions 1-9 focus on The History of Hats while questions 10-17 address Come on, Tiger Tom. The questions assess vocabulary knowledge, information retrieval, and reading comprehension through various response formats including tick boxes and short written answers. Both fiction and non-fiction texts are included to evaluate pupils' ability to understand different text types and extract relevant information from written material.

2024 KS1 Maths Papers

The 2024 Key Stage 1 Mathematics assessment consists of two papers that test different mathematical skills and concepts. Paper 1: Arithmetic contains 25 questions focused on basic calculation abilities, covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division operations. The questions progress from single-digit calculations to two-digit problems, including exercises with missing numbers and finding fractions of amounts such as halves of given numbers.

Paper 2: Reasoning covers a broader range of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. The assessment includes place value understanding, calendar reading, measurement using metres and millilitres, number patterns and sequences, and shape recognition including identifying cylinder faces. Additional topics feature data interpretation through tables and graphs, money calculations with coin values, number bonds to 20, work with fractions including halves and quarters, symmetry, and multi-step word problems set in real-life contexts.

2024 KS1 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2024 Key Stage 1 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling assessment consists of two papers that test different aspects of English language skills. Paper 1 focuses on spelling accuracy and contains 20 questions where students write the correct spelling of words within sentence contexts. The spelling test covers common words appropriate for Key Stage 1 pupils, including various spelling patterns and phonetic structures that students encounter at this level.

Paper 2 assesses fundamental grammar and punctuation skills across several key areas. The paper tests punctuation marks including capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas and apostrophes. Students are also assessed on their understanding of word classes such as nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, different sentence types, verb tenses in past and present forms, and word formation using prefixes, suffixes and plurals.
