What Was in the 2025 KS2 SATs?

2025 KS2 English Reading Paper

The 2025 Key Stage 2 English reading paper contains three texts across different genres. A Life-changing Game presents a biographical account of Phiona Mutesi, a girl from Uganda who became an international chess champion. In the Cave is an adventure story about two boys who discover a mysterious machine-like object in a cave. Longbow Girl features historical fiction following Merry Owen, a young girl competing in an archery contest against adult men. These texts cover themes including determination, discovery, and overcoming obstacles.

The reading comprehension assessment tests various skills through questions based on the three texts. Students must demonstrate vocabulary understanding, make inferences from the content, and locate evidence within the texts to support their answers. The paper assesses comprehension abilities across biographical, adventure, and historical fiction genres. Questions require students to analyze character motivations, understand plot development, and interpret textual details from the stories about chess success, cave exploration, and archery competition.

2025 KS2 Maths Papers

The 2025 Key Stage 2 Mathematics assessment consists of three papers that test different aspects of mathematical knowledge. Paper 1 focuses on arithmetic skills, covering fundamental operations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions, place value, percentages, mixed numbers, and order of operations. Questions range from basic single-digit calculations to more complex problems involving long multiplication, long division, and percentage calculations.

Papers 2 and 3 are reasoning tests that assess mathematical problem-solving through word problems and real-world scenarios. These papers cover geometry concepts including angles, 3D shapes, coordinates, and reflections, alongside number work with prime numbers, square numbers, and multiples. Students encounter practical applications involving money calculations, time conversions, unit conversions between metric and imperial measurements, mass comparisons, volume calculations, and data interpretation through pie charts and graphs.

2025 KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2025 Key Stage 2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling assessment contains two papers that test different aspects of language knowledge. Paper 1 covers grammar concepts including parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and determiners. Students work with punctuation marks including commas, apostrophes, colons, semi-colons, brackets, dashes and inverted commas. The paper also tests understanding of verb forms, active and passive voice, main and subordinate clauses, relative clauses, modal verbs, word formation through prefixes and suffixes, and formal versus informal language.

Paper 2 focuses specifically on spelling skills through a structured test format. Students complete 20 fill-in-the-blank sentences where words are read aloud by the teacher. The test covers various spelling patterns and vocabulary appropriate for Year 6 students, including common words, words with complex spelling patterns, and subject-specific vocabulary. This paper assesses students' ability to apply spelling rules, phonics knowledge, and their understanding of words learned throughout primary education within meaningful sentence contexts.

About the 2025 KS2 SATs

Children in Year 6 (those aged 10-11 at the time) took their KS2 SATs tests in May 2025. The exams started on Monday 12th May 2025 and took place over four days.

The 2025 KS2 SATs were authored, produced and managed by the STA (Standards and Testing Agency) under the authorisation of the DfE (Department for Education).

The 2025 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.
The 2025 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.

KS2 SATs were taken in Maths, Reading and GaPS under formal exam conditions. These papers were marked externally whilst separate teacher assessments in Writing and Science were marked by their teachers.

Pupils with additional educational needs were offered support and/or extra exam time where available. Modified materials using braille and large print were available to eligible pupils and their teachers.

2025 was the eighth year of 'new-style' KS2 SATs tests under the new national curriculum.

To help prepare children for the 2025 KS2 SATs, children were able to download test papers from previous years free of charge. Whilst not working to the same curriculum, KS2 SATs Papers from 2015 (and before) were still useful to aid preparation.

The 2025 SATs took place under exam conditions and were marked externally.

Once marked, children's scores were converted to scaled scores:

  • If a child's scaled score was below 100, they had not reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's scaled score was between 100 and 109, they had reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's score was 110 or over, they had exceeded the expected standard and were judged as working at greater depth.

What Was in the 2025 KS1 SATs?

2025 KS1 English Reading Papers

The 2025 Key Stage 1 English Reading assessment contains four texts across two booklets. Slow Down, Sami! presents a narrative about a boy learning patience through plant care, while Helpful Animals covers non-fiction content about guide dogs, hearing dogs, guide horses, and ferrets that assist humans. The History of Ice Cream traces the origins of ice cream from ancient China and Rome through to modern flavours and storage methods. A New Room for William follows a fictional story about a boy adjusting to his new house and making friends with his neighbour.

Questions across the papers assess reading comprehension skills through various formats including tick boxes, short written answers, and matching tasks. The assessment tests retrieval skills for finding information directly from texts, inference abilities for understanding implied meanings, and vocabulary understanding within different contexts. Questions cover both fiction and non-fiction texts, requiring students to demonstrate comprehension across narrative and informational writing styles. The answer booklet contains seventeen questions total, with nine questions based on the non-fiction ice cream text and eight questions focusing on the fictional story about William.

2025 KS1 Maths Papers

The 2025 Key Stage 1 Mathematics papers assess fundamental mathematical skills through two distinct components. Paper 1: Arithmetic contains 25 calculation questions covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with numbers up to 100. Students work with missing numbers in equations, calculate simple fractions including halves and quarters of numbers, and perform operations with multiples of 10. All questions focus on direct calculation without contextual scenarios.

Paper 2: Reasoning tests mathematical understanding through problem-solving and applied contexts. Topics include place value, calculations within 100, fractions, money, measurement comparison, and two-step word problems requiring written working. The paper covers shape properties including symmetry and vertices, time units, and data interpretation using pictograms. Questions feature visual representations and real-world contexts to assess mathematical reasoning skills alongside computational ability.

2025 KS1 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2025 Key Stage 1 English grammar, punctuation and spelling assessment consists of two papers that test different aspects of language skills. Paper 1: Spelling contains 21 sentences with missing words that students must spell correctly, including verbs in different tenses, plural nouns, adjectives, and topic-specific vocabulary. Paper 2 covers grammar and punctuation through multiple choice, circling, and sentence completion tasks that assess understanding of sentence types, word classes, and punctuation rules.

The spelling component tests students' ability to spell common words across everyday contexts, while the grammar and punctuation paper examines knowledge of sentence types such as commands, questions, exclamations, and statements. Students are assessed on their understanding of punctuation marks including full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, apostrophes, and commas, as well as word classes covering nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Additional areas include conjunctions, capital letters, contractions, tenses, and both suffixes and prefixes.
