What Was in the 2017 KS2 SATs?

2017 KS2 English Reading Paper

The 2017 KS2 English reading test contains three texts across different genres and formats. Gaby to the Rescue is a fictional narrative about a girl attempting to rescue a cat from a tree. Swimming the English Channel is a non-fiction text that covers the history of Channel swimming, including frequently asked questions and celebrity attempts by figures such as Matthew Webb and David Walliams. An Encounter at Sea presents a fictional story about a fisherman named Michael who experiences a close encounter with a whale while at sea.

The accompanying answer booklet contains 39 questions that assess reading comprehension across the three texts. These questions test vocabulary understanding, information retrieval, and inference skills. Students are also assessed on their ability to understand sequencing and text structure. The questions require pupils to demonstrate comprehension of both fictional narratives and factual information, covering various aspects of reading ability including literal understanding and deeper interpretation of the texts.

2017 KS2 Maths Papers

The 2017 Key Stage 2 Mathematics assessment consists of three papers testing different mathematical skills and concepts. Paper 1 focuses on arithmetic calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with whole numbers, decimals and fractions, alongside percentages and place value. The two reasoning papers cover broader mathematical concepts through word problems and practical applications, testing students' ability to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios.

Across the reasoning papers, students encounter questions covering measurement and conversions, geometry and shapes, coordinates, ratios and proportions, and basic algebraic concepts including sequences and patterns. The papers feature contexts such as travel statistics, cooking measurements, map scales, and temperature calculations. Students demonstrate their understanding of mathematical relationships through problems involving factors, area, volume, angles, and coordinate translation while showing their working methods throughout.

2017 KS2 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2017 KS2 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling assessment consisted of two distinct papers that evaluated different aspects of students' technical language skills. Paper 1 tested grammar and punctuation knowledge through multiple-choice and short-answer questions, covering punctuation marks including apostrophes, colons, and semi-colons, various sentence types, and word classes such as verbs, nouns, adjectives, and conjunctions. The paper also assessed understanding of clauses, prefixes and suffixes, verb tenses, active and passive voice, and vocabulary knowledge including synonyms and antonyms.

Paper 2 focused specifically on spelling assessment through a contextual task where students completed sentences by filling in missing words. This paper tested students' ability to spell 20 different words correctly within given sentence contexts, covering various spelling patterns and vocabulary that Year 6 students are expected to master. The spelling test included words from different word types and represented the range of spelling knowledge required at Key Stage 2 level.

About the 2017 KS2 SATs

Children in Year 6 (those aged 10-11 at the time) took their KS2 SATs tests in May 2017. The exams started on Monday 8th May 2017 and took place over four days.

The 2017 KS2 SATs were authored, produced and managed by the STA (Standards and Testing Agency) under the authorisation of the DfE (Department for Education).

The 2017 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.
The 2017 KS2 SATs were in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.

KS2 SATs were taken in Maths, Reading and GaPS under formal exam conditions. These papers were marked externally whilst separate teacher assessments in Writing and Science were marked by their teachers.

Pupils with additional educational needs were offered support and/or extra exam time where available. Modified materials using braille and large print were available to eligible pupils and their teachers.

2017 was the second year of 'new-style' KS2 SATs tests under the new national curriculum.

To help prepare children for the 2017 KS2 SATs, children were able to download test papers from previous years free of charge. Whilst not working to the same curriculum, KS2 SATs Papers from 2015 (and before) were still useful to aid preparation.

The 2017 SATs took place under exam conditions and were marked externally.

Once marked, children's scores were converted to scaled scores:

  • If a child's scaled score was below 100, they had not reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's scaled score was between 100 and 109, they had reached the expected standard.

  • If a child's score was 110 or over, they had exceeded the expected standard and were judged as working at greater depth.

What Was in the 2017 KS1 SATs?

2017 KS1 English Reading Papers

The 2017 Key Stage 1 English reading assessment contains five texts across two reading booklets. Reading Booklet 1 includes three texts: a story about Molly discovering who tidies her room, a poem about a child riding on their father's shoulders, and a non-fiction text explaining where water is found in nature. Reading Booklet 2 features an informational leaflet about free swimming lessons and a Native American folktale about a fox who tricks a warrior named Heron Feather.

The assessment covers literal comprehension, vocabulary understanding, and information retrieval skills through 15 questions total. Questions for Reading Booklet 1 are integrated within the booklet itself, while Reading Booklet 2 uses a separate answer booklet containing questions about both the swimming pool leaflet and the folktale. The question types assess students' ability to retrieve information, make inferences, understand vocabulary, and sequence events from the texts.

2017 KS1 Maths Papers

The 2017 KS1 Mathematics SATs consisted of two papers assessing different mathematical skills. Paper 1: Arithmetic contained 25 calculation questions testing fundamental operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with whole numbers up to 100. The paper also included simple fractions such as finding halves and thirds of numbers, along with missing number problems that required children to complete basic arithmetic sequences.

Paper 2: Reasoning featured problem-solving questions across multiple mathematical topics. The assessment covered number operations, place value, money calculations, time, measurement using rulers, and data interpretation from charts and graphs. Children were required to demonstrate mathematical reasoning through tasks involving counting patterns, identifying even numbers, analyzing shape properties including pentagons and edges, and solving multi-step word problems set in real-world contexts such as sharing objects equally and interpreting survey data.

2017 KS1 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Papers

The 2017 KS1 English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling assessment contains two papers that test fundamental literacy skills for Key Stage 1 pupils. Paper 1 focuses on spelling abilities through twenty questions that require students to spell words correctly within sentence contexts. The spelling component covers common words, phonetic patterns, homophones, contractions, and various spelling rules appropriate for this age group.

Paper 2 assesses core grammar and punctuation concepts through a range of questions testing different language skills. Students demonstrate their understanding of word classes including nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, while also applying correct punctuation marks such as full stops, question marks, exclamation marks, commas, and apostrophes. Additional areas covered include conjunctions, noun phrases, singular and plural forms, verb tenses, suffix formation, and sentence construction with appropriate punctuation.
